Best Ice Cream in Cherry Grove Beach (Deals + Nearby Favorites)
Local classics, budget-friendly kid treats, and a couple “worth the drive” dessert trips.
If you’re hunting for ice cream in Cherry Grove Beach (North Myrtle Beach), you’ve got a handful of legit options—whether you want a classic cone after the beach, something fun for the kids, or a short drive to a “worth it” dessert spot.
Below are our favorite Cherry Grove ice cream stops, starting with the local legend.
Seasonal note: A few Cherry Grove / Ocean Drive ice cream spots are seasonal. Dairy Hut typically opens in late February and OD Pavilion can be seasonal too—call ahead if you’re arriving early in the season or visiting during odd weather weeks.
Quick Picks: Which one should you choose?
- Closest classic Cherry Grove cone: Dairy Hut
- Best budget “kid treat”: Dairy Hut cotton candy ($2.99)
- Cheapest cone deal nearby: Boulineau’s Express soft-serve cone ($1.49)
- Cherry Grove themed stop: Mermaid’s Dream Ice Cream
- Ocean Drive / Main St night dessert: Melt + OD Pavilion Ice Cream Shop
- Short drive “wow” dessert: Crazy Mason
- Short drive small-town classic: Calabash Creamery
🍨Dairy Hut (Cherry Grove Beach) – The Classic After-Beach Stop

Imagine zipping across the Atlantic waves, spotting dolphins, and creating epic family memories—all from your North Myrtle Beach rental. But wait, what about age requirements? Don’t let confusing rules or sticker shock hold you back.
In this guide, we’ll break down South Carolina’s jet ski (PWC) rules simply, share the best nearby riding spots for families staying in Cherry Grove and North Myrtle Beach, and explain why this is worth every splash.
🏡Staying near the action: Browse our Cherry Grove rentals and oceanfront homes.
By the way… “All watercraft must operate 100 yards or more off shore” -City of North Myrtle Beach
Are Jet Skis Allowed in North Myrtle Beach?
✅ Yes—jet skis are allowed, but there are rules about where you can operate and how close you can be to shore. Follow posted signage and the rental company’s safety briefing. If you want the “official” language, use the links at the bottom.
South Carolina Jet Ski Age Rules (Made Simple)
💡Key idea: South Carolina focuses on the operator (driver), not a strict statewide minimum age for passengers.
- Passenger age: No strict statewide minimum age to ride as a passenger (company rules may differ).
- Life jackets: Everyone must wear a properly fitted life jacket on a jet ski.
- Born after July 1, 2007: Operators typically need a boater education certificate (easy online course via SCDNR-approved providers).
- Under 16: You can drive with adult supervision (18+) or after completing the boater education requirement (company policy may be stricter).
- Real-world rental rules: Many rental companies require drivers 16+ with ID and 18+ to sign contracts. Always check with the company.

Note: Laws and company policies can change. Always confirm current requirements and operating zones with your rental provider and posted local signage.

Is It Worth $100–$200 Per Hour?
For many families, yes—because it’s not just a ride. It’s a core vacation memory.
- Unmatched adrenaline: Fast, thrilling, and way more “alive” than most tourist activities.
- Access to hidden inlets/ICW scenery: You see parts of the Grand Strand most visitors miss.
- Quality time away from crowded beaches: More “us” time, less shoulder-to-shoulder time.
- Pro photos/videos: Perfect for family keepsakes and social sharing.

FAQ
Do I need a boating license to rent a jet ski in South Carolina?
If you were born after July 1, 2007, operators typically need a boater education certificate (or a rental-company option such as a temporary safety certificate, if available). Always confirm with your rental provider.
Can kids ride on a jet ski?
Often yes, as passengers. However, everyone must wear a properly fitted life jacket, and each company may have its own age rules.
What’s the best option for first-timers?
Choose 1 hour if you can—30 minutes goes fast once you factor in learning time. If your group is nervous, ask for calmer water routes (often the ICW).

Ocean Drive Main Street Development: Melt Ice Cream Expansion and New Shops Coming Soon

Melt Ice Cream expansion and new shops are part of the Ocean Drive Main Street development.Main Street along Ocean Drive is entering a new chapter as a large-scale construction project begins transforming the area into a more vibrant and walkable destination for both locals and visitors. As a result, the area is being positioned for long-term growth while preserving what makes it a favorite place to visit.
This Ocean Drive Main Street development will span more than 40,000 square feet and is designed to support the community for decades to come.
“We are preparing Main Street here on Ocean Drive for the next 50 years.”
— Developer
To accomplish that goal, the project will be built in phases. Phase one will include a new two-story restaurant, along with the relocation of an existing neighboring business. Together, these changes aim to create clean, safe, and family-friendly spaces that enhance daily life while expanding things to do on Ocean Drive.
At the same time, one of the most anticipated highlights of the project is the Melt Ice Cream expansion. Melt Ice Cream Shop, a longtime favorite among both visitors and locals, will be located within the new Main Street development. This move will allow the business to grow, expand its offerings, and better serve the community.
Melt Ice Cream Shop has earned national recognition, including being named Best Ice Cream in South Carolina by Food & Wine. The shop also recently won the Best Flavor Award at this year’s Cone-A-Con, beating out hundreds of entries from across the country.
The award-winning flavor, Granddaddy Caddy, features salted butterscotch ice cream with roasted pecans and a rich, buttery butterscotch swirl.
“I’m super excited to start some of these new projects — new flavors and new items we can add that we just haven’t been able to provide before.”
— Brandon Causey, Owner of Melt Ice Cream
The expanded space will give Melt Ice Cream more room to innovate, creating even more reasons for visitors to stop by as part of their list of things to do on Ocean Drive.
During our visit, Melt Ice Cream was closed, but we captured video footage of the surrounding construction area, along with walk-through footage of the development site. The project is located just down the street from Fat Harold’s, a familiar landmark for many returning guests.

In addition to the Melt Ice Cream expansion, the developer plans to introduce new retail and commercial spaces, bringing more shopping and dining options to Main Street on Ocean Drive.
The developer believes the project will bring new jobs and economic opportunity to the area. City planning officials agree that investment through developments like this benefits the entire community.
“Investment into the community ripples out across the whole community. It makes everybody prosper. The commercial development and residential growth we’re seeing help all of us do well.”
Although a long-standing building will be demolished as part of the project, the developer emphasized that the intent is not to erase the area’s history or charm, but to preserve and strengthen it for future generations.
For our previous guests and longtime visitors, this is something to watch closely. A bigger Melt Ice Cream, along with new shops and dining options, means even more to enjoy during your next visit to Ocean Drive.

Parking in Cherry Grove can be tricky, especially during the busy summer months. Renting a golf cart makes getting around easier for families—just be sure to plan ahead for delivery timing, HOA rules, and street parking limitations. Many rentals include golf cart parking or can be prepped for delivery to your vacation home.
Featured rental partner: A-Jax Golf Cart Rentals — view rates • Call 843-421-1006
1. Local Rules You Must Know
Operating a golf cart in North Myrtle Beach (including Cherry Grove) is legal — but regulated. Use this section as your quick compliance guide so guests avoid fines and stay safe.
Where you can drive
Golf carts are only permitted on secondary roadways (posted 35 mph or less). You cannot travel along the main roads shown in red on the official city map (Ocean Blvd, 27th Ave S, Highway 17, Sea Mountain Hwy). You may cross those roads at intersections only.
Time & distance limits
Operation is sunrise to sunset only. Permitted carts may operate within 4 miles of the registration address (or 4 miles of a gated community ingress/egress) and only on secondary roads posted ≤ 35 mph. Crossing a >35 mph road is only allowed at an intersection.
Driver & documents
Drivers must be 16+ with a valid driver’s license. The operator must carry: registration certificate, proof of liability insurance, and driver’s license.
Safety & compliance
- Golf cart must display the South Carolina permit sticker.
- Seating capacity cannot be exceeded—everyone must have a seat.
- All state traffic laws apply (stop signs, signals, yielding).
- North Myrtle Beach PD enforces violations; fines typically start around $100+.
Quick checklist for renters:
- Valid driver’s license (16+)
- SC permit sticker displayed
- Proof of insurance in cart
- Stay on secondary roads (≤ 35 mph)
- Within 4 miles of registration address
- Sunrise to sunset only

3. Top Family-Friendly Routes
These loops were curated for low traffic, quick stops, and family fun. Always stay on secondary roads and obey posted speeds and signals.
Beach Cruiser — 5 miles
Ocean Blvd → Cherry Grove Pier access → 27th Ave loop back. Scenic and simple—great for photos and beach access.
Dining Dash — 3 miles
Short run south toward Sea Mountain Hwy dining strip; quick loop back via secondary streets. Perfect for lunch or ice cream runs.
Sunset Stroll — 7 miles
Head north to the inlet and time this one for sunset photos. Daylight use only—no night driving.
Family Explorer — 4 miles
42nd Ave walkover, local shops and treats. Designed to avoid main arterials—kids love the stops.
These low-traffic loops hit beaches, treats, and views—all on cart-legal paths. Stick to 15–20 mph, yield to pedestrians, and check local rules. Pro tip: Pair with a weekly cart rental for under $30/day off-season!
4. Interactive Map (Official)
Open this on your phone to plan routes and identify red-zone roads (no cart travel). The embedded map is the official North Myrtle Beach ArcGIS map for golf cart roads.
Tip: Red roads = no cart travel. Cross main roads only at intersections. Source: North Myrtle Beach official map & golf cart laws.
5. Pro Tips for a Smooth Ride
- Charge nightly. Electric carts drain faster than guests expect—charge after heavy use.
- Secure cargo. Bring bungees or a small cooler strap for groceries / beach gear.
- Kids & seats. Don’t exceed seating; add boosters for smaller children.
- Eco mode. Use low-speed/eco mode to extend battery on longer loops.
- Delivery tip. Ask A-Jax to drop off at the driveway for the smoothest check-in.
